Literature Connections

3 Types of Influence

Picture
The Hero's Journey was reintroduced to us by Joseph Campbell, and it shows that all main characters follow the same 12 steps throughout their stories, no matter time, place, culture, etc. These stories contain archetypal characters that reappear through all Hero's Journey stories, shown in the forms of heroes, shadows, tricksters, shape shifters, temptresses, and such. Then the allusions bring it all together in the end by giving us little references to other stories, whether by the same author, or by another author, or of real people or events.

After completing our unit on mythology and our presentation on mythology, I see that literature is connected through allusions, the Hero's Journey, sometimes, and character archetypes. We see allusions in popular pieces of work now-a-days, even using them. Including, Romeo and Juliet, the star crossed lovers, the Greek and Roman gods, and more. As far as archetypal characters, the previously mentioned Romeo and Juliet are archetypal characters known as the star crossed lovers. Or in The Odyssey, Odysseus is the Hero of the story, and his story follows the Hero's Journey template from the Ordinary World to the Return With the Elixir. We also see the Hero's Journey in popular works today in Disney movies, from Snow White to Moana. I see so much more in the literature I read or watch, and it helped me create my own idea for a letter to Disney.
